I led the integration, harmonization and visualizaiton of WHO European health data and health information and evidence, resulting in the European Health Information Gateway.
The platform was the result of the Regional Director’s data modernization initiative in the office, emphasizing use of up-to-date technologies and emphasizing data syndication and its use over merely publishing massive data catalogs.
The principles used in the design were human-centredness, data syndication, and data communication.
The platform consisted of:
- a data warehouse that re-engineered the data management processes by uncoupling software development from data manager tasks, multilingual editing of metadata for all indicators and health measures, and made data accessible through a public API
- a web platform with data visualization tools, exploration, data syndication tools
- mobile app for access to essential health statistics, refreshable with the latest data from the central data warehouse.
The platform and its use were also evaluated after two years in use. Read the report How has the use of the WHO European Health Information Gateway changed since its launch in 2016?.
